Headin' Back 05:24
The time went rollin' by The hours turned to days She said she'd be there 'till the end I guess the end was yesterday He woke up in the cold With the rain wrapped 'round his head Starin' down that old dirt road Somewhere in the wilderness Now he's headin' back again But he can't find the start Now he's headin' back again Searching in the dark Through the broken glass Into the years he lost long before Hiding in the tears and blood That pored out from the door Now he's driftin' backwards Falling through the hail All along the ravaged plains Burnt right down to the jail Now he's headin' back again But he can't find the start Now he's headin' back again Searching in the dark He never once forgot her Even for a day But he tried his best to change her face And everything she would say Lies aren't any less Than the truth without a past At least that's what he told himself So the days could slowly pass Now he's headin' back again But he can't find the start Now he's headin' back again Searching in the dark He thought he'd moved on He thought she couldn't stay But the years told another tale And crippled what he became He cursed the world around him For all he had become But he never once cursed her For everything she had done Now he's headin' back again But he can't find the start Now he's headin' back again Searching in the dark

In my festering mind you sit And I can’t help to think That if this would’ve happened differently We could’ve worked it so it fit Well if you never wanted me If this was just a drag If you never wanted this Why didn’t you save us both the pain? There you’re standin’ spinnin’ lies While excuses hit the floor If you felt this way from the start Why didn’t you say it all before? Well if you never wanted me If this was just a drag If you never wanted this Why didn’t you save us both the pain? I’ll take my blame. I won’t be free Of the guilt that’s mine to hold But you sure as hell better take what’s yours I ain’t a goddamn fool Well if I never wanted you This was just a drag If I never wanted this I could’ve saved us both the pain

Guy Fawkes is punching cattle And there’s nowhere left to sleep His head is pointed high As he looks out from the wings There’s nothing here to which you have To feel so lonely for As I walk out to the twilight Cracked open like the door Head these words, now don’t get lost Ramblin’ around They’ll crucify you at the wrists And Hang you upside down And as I’m goin’ ‘round again I feel so insecure There’s nothing left but emptiness And long abandoned words Mother Mary, dear ol’ god Don’t leave me here with her I’d rather soon take off and run Hunt buffalo for fur But if I must care-take the lot I’ll do the best I can With a rifle on my shoulder And a bottle in my hand Take your leave. Sing his praise Bound by love and hate He’s handcuffed to the iron bars He’ll soon be set ablaze And as I’ll watch the flames rise I’ll know there’s nothing left On this world here, or any other To keep me from your breast It was snowing out in Harvard As the soldiers stood in place Laughter on the hilltops Burned brighter than the day Lightning like the waves leapt Out across the sky As Judith silently declared “Leave them there to die”

In the south where it's hot Where the breeze burns your skin My husband worked through the day 'Til the sunset would begin In the factories down By the ocean docks Until one day he showed up And the gates were all locked They sent everyone home And out on their way They said they didn't need them no more So they cut all their pay They threw them out To beg in the streets To stand out with nothin' On the burning concrete There was no work That was needed in town But my family couldn't leave For I was bedbound So he packed up his clothes And took the boots on his feet In need of any work To be done in the heat He was gone for weeks And when finally he returned We couldn't buy a meal With the money that he'd earned And when he went and left For the second time He took the boots on his feet And a gun by his side So my family survived And we made it through the summer Though I hadn't seen my husband Since he left us to plunder And when he returned Home for us again He was lyin’ in a coffin With a bullet in his head I wept for days For I had lost my love And no one can supply For my children from up above

My days are gone almost as soon as they're here Time slippin' away and it all disappears Better keep running. Better keep your feet off the ground The smoke's as black as the belly of the hound Stand at the ready. Sharpen your spears Hell's bent over. The sky's full of tears Every day I've been out workin' in the yard But something seems different now. Somethin's lost in the cards I lie in the cold And work in the heat While you beg for forgiveness From down off your feet I walk the fields full of malevolence and fear Down through the ash that covers each year I'll strip down your symbols. I'll convert your faith You say I've got no virtues. But yours have been misplaced The road's dark ahead. But it's darker here The saints are watching. And the scapegoats are near I've been gone for a while. I don't plan to return The flames are rising everywhere you turn The blood of the infidels have filled every last trough The sun's beatin' down and my enemies are off Fightin' someone else. Someone's dead in the road I'm gonna move to Alabama. Make Georgia be our home I sent for the doctor With your gravestone in my hand Your epitaph was blank You were dead in the sand The bells are ringing the words of Rimbaud It echoes through the north. Blowin' through the stone The moon howls and burns. I'll be on my way Everything's dead. And what I can't see looks the same Every step you take is one less you have The militia came through. They were startin' up the draft The barn's empty now. Famine's everywhere No words will feed us. Not even the prayers The guilt you've inherited won't last long You shrugged off your allies and all just because Your enemies are down. And you don't think they'll rise again The river's turnin' black. You claim every drop's full of sin There’s not one moment I’ll ever get back Dogma is everywhere The truth’s cloaked in black All things must die. The stream will cease to flow My prophets are dead. They all had to go They've been gone for a while. But then again so have yours Every one of 'em's on trial, and they know the score

Acia 06:04
The sky hung open down on East Broadway One day you’re gonna throw my love away They sent for the riders, but when they arrived There was no one left to subjugate They buried their weapons—headed south to repent They followed the stream back from where they were sent The black sand grew darker in the dead of the night And the bounty hunter’s Airedales caught their scent Acia; With your wanderer’s eyes And your Russian hips —Acia The night grew colder and onward they road ‘Til they could not ride further—they unpacked their loads Betrayed by their sleep, they awoke to horns Surrounded on all fronts—then killed in the road The hunters brought back trophies as proof for their pay They road through the night and on through the day For they would not see a penny if they showed up late Acia’s patience extended no more than she’d claimed Acia; With your golden ashtrays —Mind like cold steel —Acia They arrived at the station with the midday sun They handed her proof, and then she begun To inspect it closely, and then she spoke “You’re one bit shy” She said, “Your work’s not done” “It all should be there” they pleaded their case “We slaughtered them all. No one escaped” “Well then it’s my mind or yours that’s drowning in hell You get no reward for a job disgraced” Acia; With your widower husbands And your stubborn ways —Acia The station was crowded. People bustled through town She looked up East Broadway and then she looked down She grabbed for her pistol slung on her hip But the hunters were faster and shot her dead into the ground Somebody screamed, then ran for the cops The town erupted in uproar at the girl who’d been shot The hunters mounted their horses and road towards the sun Acia was nowhere near the girl who’d been shot Acia; With your trap like complexion And your empty words —Acia

Stolen Time 05:59
I’ll guard my thinking and mend against pain I’m so tired, and my herd’s sick and lame I’ve never felt anything as potent as shame She said she’d come with me, but I could sense her lies My borrowed time’s up and I’m runnin’ on stolen time The country’s gone dark—the siege is under way They’ll throw out all the rebels—everyone that doesn’t think the same The capitol’s lost to grief and heartache The train’s a-tumblin’, rollin’ down the line My borrowed time’s up and I’m runnin’ on stolen time The fire went out once sea crept up the shore They censored all the texts and they punished all the whores The stars died out. I’m lost on the killing floor I can’t recall laughter or the feeling when you pine My borrowed time’s up and I’m runnin’ on stolen time Disappointment in man has kept me singing the blues I didn’t have much faith to start, but they make the rest so easy to lose I turn on the music to drown out the news I heard you crying, but you say that you’ll be fine My borrowed time’s up and I’m runnin’ on stolen time I’m so sick of love, but life won’t leave me be I’m sleeping alone and I’m reading Dostoevsky The cells are empty, but no one feels they’re free The writing has faded. And there’s nothing on the shrine My borrowed time’s up and I’m runnin’ on stolen time

Passing through San Luis Obispo You can smell the Madonna Inn It’s hot in San Francisco And I can’t be the first to sin Why did it happen this way? Why didn’t you come before? Why didn’t you tell me That you’re so close to the door? The telephone lines are leaning Towering over the bay I’m a long, long way from home And I’m going further away Why did it happen this way? Why didn’t you come before? Why didn’t you tell me, That you’re so close to the door? I said some things to you And I don’t take them back Life can drag on and on But the good parts sure go by fast Why did it happen this way? Why didn’t you come before? Why didn’t you tell me, That you’re so close to the door?

A killer stalks his prey He does it without remorse or shame And even though he's so sick and loathsome He's human just the same The priest says that you're off and you're down to hell If you don't believe the same Blinded by old confusion But he's human just the same He fought men that he didn't know For reasons he couldn't name Just because someone told him to But he's human just same

A pack of hounds are crying Under gunfire while they chase The singing bells of art and sound And the remnants of their face With the charms and pleasures of the sounds Ringing in their ears The instruments of light and time Harmonize their fears I’m goin’ And you’re goin’ too I’m goin’ But I won’t leave with you Take the soldier from his post And trumpet in the night While the music of his science voice Marches off in fright The chief he rests now all alone Sailing in the rain Those compositions, beautiful For whomever’s there to take I’m goin’ And you’re goin’ too I’m goin’ But I won’t leave with you The graves are filled. The ships are dry The rivers are ablaze Raise the mast. Hoist the flag Then empty out the graves There’s nothing left here on the ground ‘Cept the cities in the sand And I won’t stay ‘round long enough For them to see my hand I’m goin’ And you’re goin’ too I’m goin’ But I won’t leave with you Stand here now, all alone By the birds that pleasure brings Do not forget your loneliness Or the smoke and ash and sting Have I left you here now long enough To comprehend your fate To redefine your loneliness And triumph your mistakes? I’m goin’ And you’re goin’ too I’m goin’ But I won’t leave with you

about

Notes by Paul Rishell & Annie Raines

There is an authority in the voice of K.C. Harris that
the ear is quick to accept. It’s reminiscent of artists
like Ernest Tubb, Dave Dudley, and Junior Brown. A
Big Sky of a voice.

The element of fire flickers through his lyrics like
they’re branded into the High Plains. Harris’ baritone
is part of the story, summoning images of windblown
wood, blue skies, a burning sun, like a Remington
painting. That being said, this ain’t no cowboy show.
The tumbleweeds on this terrain include references
to Rimbaud, Dostoyevsky and the Bible, painting a
landscape of seared emotions at odds with the cool
beauty of the cerebral world.

His original songs are flying dreams, lyrical prophecies,
pictures from life’s other side, (“A pack of hounds are
crying / Under gunfire while they chase / The singing
bells of art and sound / And the remnants of their
face” - You’re Going Too), with war, predation, exile
and slaughter as a prelude to more serious betrayals.
(“He cursed the world around him for all he had
become / but he never once cursed her for
everything she had done” - Headin’ Back).

Within his songs are subtle clues as to where his
influences leave off and his own original path begins.
His feeling for everything he sings is ever-present.
You can’t find a time and place to put it but you want
to listen and learn.
